How to Do a Foot Jab in Muay Thai
- 1). Stand in a Muay Thai ready stance. Your feet are shoulder width apart with one leg a step forward. Bounce lightly on the balls of your feet. Muay Thai is all about speed, so stay light on your feet. Hands are held high in Muay Thai. Fists are at eye level with elbows flared slightly outward. The arms are wider apart than in traditional western boxing.
- 2). Raise the knee of your kicking leg to the height of your hip. The Muay Thai foot jab can be done from either leg. It is fastest when thrown from your front leg. It has more power when thrown from your back leg. If you are throwing the Muay Thai foot jab from your front leg, just raise your front knee. If you are throwing it from your back leg, step forward into the foot jab.
- 3). Snap your kicking foot at your target. This can be a knee, the abdomen or the head. As you thrust your foot forward, push off on the ball of your plant foot. The Muay Thai foot jab uses the power of the entire body. You are launching yourself into your opponent. Since you will not be recovering your leg after the kick, you don't have to worry about being off balance.
- 4). Curl your toes back and strike your target with the ball of your kicking foot. Make sure your toes are out of the way. Since you are thrusting your entire body into the Muay Thai foot jab, you will likely break your toes if you don't curl them back.
- 5). Kick through your target. Do not stop at the surface. Step through and drop your kicking leg to the ground. Return to a Muay Thai fighting stance.
