How to Replace a Keyboard on an Inspiron 1000
- 1). Turn your Dell Inspiron 1000 off and remove the AC power cable (if it's connected). Close your computer, turn it over and remove the battery from its compartment by sliding the battery release latch down.
- 2). Turn your Inspiron right-side up and open it. Locate the plastic guard just above the keyboard that runs the length of the computer.
- 3). Insert the tip of your flat-head screwdriver in the seam between the plastic guard and the side of the computer. Gently lift the guard up until it pops off of the computer.
- 4). Lift the keyboard up by the top and place it face down over the trackpad located at the bottom of the computer. You'll notice the thick connector ribbon that runs from the interior motherboard of the computer and connects to the back of the keyboard in the middle.
- 5). Use your fingers to unplug the ribbon from the back of the keyboard. Set the keyboard aside and connect the ribbon to the back of the new keyboard (available from your Dell retailer or online), fit the keyboard in the computer and snap the plastic guard in place. Replace the battery and you're done.
