How to Make a Rich Woman's Toga Out of a Sheet
- 1). Obtain as large a flat bed sheet as possible. Queen-size is probably the largest ready-made sheet you can get. A silk sheet is ideal, otherwise a cotton or cotton-mix sheet will do. Silk was around in Roman days and used by the richer classes, as was cotton.
- 2). Choose your favorite colored sheet. If you have a white sheet you want to use, you can dye it in the washing machine. Or leave the sheet white if you'd prefer.
- 3). Measure from the top of your shoes up to your underarms.
- 4). Cut the width of the sheet to the measurement, adding on a couple of inches so you can hem the material.
- 5). Fold and iron 1 inch of fabric back from the cut edge.
- 6). Glue the folded fabric into place with fabric glue, such as Liquid Stitch.
- 7). Fold the fabric back another inch on the same edge. Iron and glue into place. This quick and easy hemming technique is adequate for a fancy dress party outfit. It neatens the cut edges and stops them from fraying.
- 8). Try the toga on. Stand, holding the length of material with the middle at your front. Wrap it behind you and bring the ends back around to the front again on the opposite sides. Cross the fabric over at the front and bring the top corners of the toga up to tie around the back of your neck. Make sure that the toga is not too long.
- 9). Use the excess material as a drape to go over one or both of your shoulders. Hem it the same way you did with the toga. Although the original Romans didn't use anything to pin their toga outfits in place, the odd safety pin here and there is insurance against the costume coming apart later in the night.

Enhance your toga by trimming it with gold braiding, colored ribbon or scraps of material cut into strips. Fabric glue is handy for attaching these. Add a few stitches every few inches to ensure the trimming stays in place.
