How to Install a Secondary SATA II Hard Drive
- 1). Turn off the computer and unplug the power cord.
- 2). Remove the side access panel. This may require the removal of screws from the back of the computer that secure the side access panel in place.
- 3). Touch the metal frame of the computer case before touching anything inside the computer to dissipate any built-up static electricity.
- 4). Slide the SATA II hard drive into a vacant 3.5 inch drive bay located at the front of the computer under the optical drives. Insert the drive so that side of the drive containing the connectors faces the rear of the computer.
- 5). Secure the drive in place with the screws provided.
- 6). Locate a free SATA power connector from the power supply and insert it into the power connector slot on the back of the SATA II drive. It is keyed to be inserted in only one direction. The power connector slot is larger than the data connector slot.
- 7). Plug the SATA II data connector into the rear of the drive and locate the SATA connector on the motherboard. This is also keyed so it can be inserted in only one direction, and is usually located at the lower right corner of the motherboard in a standard upright case. It is labelled "SATA" for easy identification.
- 8). Replace the side access panel and replace the power cord.
- 9). Boot up the computer and install any software provided with the SATA II hard drive if the operating system does not automatically detect the drive and install the required software.
