Fun Metric Math Problems for Kids

    Metric Scavenger Hunt

    • Give each student a ruler that measures in centimeters and a list of measurements they must find within the classroom. During this activity, the students will search through the classroom and measure different types of objects to find ones that match up with the given measurements. Have students find objects of various lengths and widths. Prepare for this activity by measuring the different objects that you would like them to find. You can also provide clues with the measurements if you want them to find specific items. For example, "I am 10 centimeters long, and I am used to communicate. What am I?" This could lead students to find the classroom walkie-talkie.

    Math Matching

    • Give students worksheets with two columns side-by-side. The first column will have the standard measurements listed, and the second will list the metric equivalents. Mix the two columns up so that the equivalents are not next to each other. Have students draw a line from the standard measurement across to its metric equivalent.

    Estimate the Metric Measurement

    • Display a variety of items on a table at the front of the classroom. These items should vary in size and shape. Have students guess the items' metric measurements, such as length, width and height, and write down their estimates. Reveal the correct answers by selecting students to come up and measure the items. You can vary the game by having students use different metric units of measurement, such as centimeters, millimeters and decimeters.

    Recipe Conversion

    • Provide students with a list of popular recipes, such as for a pizza, chocolate chip cookies and pancakes. They will then convert the ingredient list to metric measurements. The students can use a metric conversion table if they need it but challenge them to try it on their own first. A fun extension of this lesson is to actually make the recipe one day in the school kitchen or a home economics room. Students will have fun with this activity plus create a tasty treat in the process.
