How to Cut a Sunflower

    • 1). Cut the sunflower stems first thing in the morning or during the evening hours. According to Kansas State University the blooms will be free of moisture and dew during these hours, making the stems less pliable and easier to cut through.

    • 2). Remove stems from the ground that are completely open. Avoid cutting off sunflowers that are opened but have begun to brown or wilt.

    • 3). Cut the stem as long as possible with a clean, sharp knife. This will allow you to remove more stem when you bring the flowers inside to display.

    • 4). Remove any damaged leaves or stems from the sunflower before bringing it inside. The wilted leaves and damaged stems will look unsightly and suck up water required by the healthy sections of the sunflower.

    • 5). Cut the stems to the desired length at an angle with a sharp knife and display them in a large vase or container filled with warm water and floral food, which is available from a florist in your area, or with a home remedy, such as white vinegar or sugar.
