    • 1). Squeeze the desired colors of paint onto the paint palette. Since the paints are water-based, a plastic or wax-paper palette will be appropriate.

    • 2). Load the long-handled brush with one or two colors of paint for an oil-paint look. Choose one color for one side of the brush and another color for the other side. This will blend the colors on the canvas, creating a rich texture.

    • 3). Begin painting, holding the brush near the end of the handle. Holding the brush in this position will give the artist a better perspective on what they are painting, as well as prevent the artist from pressing too hard on the canvas when painting. The paint should be applied thickly to imitate the look of oils.

    • 4). Give the painting definition by outlining select areas using the squeeze-tube tip of the paint bottles. Use a brush to lightly feather the outline into the painted area, creating highlights, definition and texture.

    • 5). Mix a small amount of clear paint medium with colors to create a smoother, more flowing effect. For example, use clear medium when painting flower stems and leaves that require long brush movements. Add texture to these areas with paint once the initial smooth strokes are completed.

    • 6). Create textured areas with a palette knife. Load the palette knife with a few different colors. Tap the knife flat against the canvas and push the pointed end up, then bring the knife down to smear the paint.

    • 7). Let the painting dry for at least an hour. Fresh paint can be added to a dried painting to create more depth and texture.
