Determine the type of trap to be used: kill traps or live catch. Kill traps include snap traps, which are cheap but present dangers to children and pets, and the more expensive electronic traps, which present less of a threat to pets and children. To catch mice alive use catch-and-release traps.

    • 2). Bait the trap with peanut butter. Victor Pest lists the following other effective baits for rodents: slices of hot dog, chocolate, gumdrops or crackers. Bait snap traps on the yellow trigger paddle before setting the trap. Spread peanut butter on the holey inside section of the electronic trap. Spread peanut butter on the back end of catch-and-release traps, as far away from the trap entrance as possible.

    • 3). Place traps in the rooms where rodents or droppings have been spotted. Position traps against walls, behind furniture, refrigerators, in cupboards, under sinks and under the stove. Place several traps to increase the chance of catching rodents. Trigger the trap according to its instructions.

    Remove Dead Rodents

Check traps daily for rodents. Put on rubber gloves and get a trash bag ready. Have someone hold the trash bag open for you if the task can't be managed on your own.

    • 2). Sweep dead rodents caught in snap traps into a dustbin with a broom. Do not remove them from the traps. Empty the dustbin into the trash bag. For rodents trapped in electronic traps, turn the trap off, unlatch the top door and dump the carcass into the trash bag.

    • 3). Double-bag the dead rodent to contain the smell and prevent attracting flies and other animals.

    • 4). Dispose of the double-bagged dead rodent in a lidded garbage container outside. Do not leave a rodent carcass in an indoor garbage can.

    • 5). Replace snap traps. Wash out electronic traps with dish soap and hot water. Reapply bait, trigger and return to the affected areas.

    Remove Live Rodents

    • 1). Check catch-and-release traps for rodents daily.

    • 2). Wear rubber gloves when handling the catch-and-release trap. Take trap to an outdoor public field. Parks or public wooded areas are best.

    • 3). Open the trap door and wait for the mouse to leave. This shouldn't take long as the mouse will likely bolt out of the trap the moment it's been opened.

    • 4). Wash out the trap with dish soap and hot water. Re-apply bait, return it to the designated area and trigger the trap.
