How to Grow Junipers
- 1). Choose a planting location that is sunny for the majority of the day and has soil that drains well. To test soil for sufficient drainage, dig a small trench that is no more than 6 inches deep and fill it with water. If the water has not drained within 4 hours, drainage materials will need to be added to the soil.
- 2). Remove the juniper plant from the container it was purchased in and loosen the root ball with your hands so that the roots are no longer restricted.
- 3). Dig a hole deep enough for the top of the root ball to be at ground level and wide enough to be able to spread the roots out. If planting multiple junipers, space the holes 3 to 4 feet apart to allow room for growth.
- 4). Place the plant in the hole, with the roots fanning out to the sides and refill with soil. Water the area well.
- 5). Sprinkle 2 tsp. of 10-10-10 formula fertilizer around the plant right after planting. The following year, begin applying 16-4-8 formula according to package directions in early spring and late summer. Always water directly after fertilizing.
