    • 1). Disconnect the power cord from your DSL modem.

    • 2). Locate the Ethernet cable that connects the DSL modem to the computer. Unplug the end that's connected to the computer.

    • 3). Plug the same Ethernet end that was in the computer into your new router. You'll plug it into a port labeled "WAN" or "Internet" depending on the manufacturer.

    • 4). Insert the router's power cable into an electrical outlet and reconnect the power cord to your DSL modem. Wait for both power lights to turn solid, then look for flickering data lights on both devices. This indicates data exchange.

    • 5). Run an Ethernet cable from the new router to one of the computers. The computer should automatically detect the new hardware and run an installation wizard.

    • 6). Open any Web browser to manually configure the router if the computer doesn't automatically connect to the Internet. Type in the configuration Web address provided in the router's user manual and follow the configuration instructions.

    • 7). Connect the second computer to the router with an Ethernet network cable. Any Ethernet port can be used. If a password was set up during the router configuration, the computer will prompt you to enter the password before joining the network.
