Paper Mache Crafts for Birthdays
- Pinatas are a common sight at birthday parties because they offer decoration as well as activity for the big day. While you can purchase many different types of pinatas from party supply stores, you can also create your own using inexpensive materials. This will allow you to customize the pinata to fit the party theme and interests of the guest of honor. To create a pinata, blow up a balloon and tie it closed. Dip 1 inch strips of newspaper into a glue and water mixture, then wrap the paper around the balloon. Repeat with several layers and let dry fully. Paint and decorate as desired. Cut a hole in the back to fill the pinata with candy and toys.
- Paper mache can also be used to make colorful decorations for the birthday party, such as centerpieces. The centerpiece you make can largely be based on the theme. For example, a young girl's Disney princess-themed party could feature a paper mache carriage in the shape of a pumpkin for Cinderella. Using a balloon as the base, cover with paper mache strips and paint. Add texture with crepe paper, sequins or glitter. Mount the carriage to a cardboard circle and surround with pictures of Cinderella characters, or with tea lights.
- Party hats are offered to guests as favors and are a colorful way to kick off the celebration. Several days before the celebration, you can make many different types of party hats for the guests. Start by folding a piece of cardstock or poster board into a cone shape. Tape or staple along the seam. Wrap the cone with several layers of paper mache strips. Paint and decorate as desired. Punch a hole in the bottom of either side of the hat and thread through with a strip of elastic.
- Paper mache craft projects can also be the main event at a children's birthday celebration. At the party, give each child a balloon that had been covered with paper mache. Also supply the children with paint, markers, construction paper, glue, pipe cleaners, yarn and other craft supplies so they can make their own creations. Instead of pre-making that paper mache balloons, you can give the party guests paper clay to mold their items. These take less time to dry and can be ready to paint and decorate within an hour.
