    • 1). Cut back the plant at ground level with a pair of lopping shears.

    • 2). Pick up the fallen, dead plant litter from the bed.

    • 3). Dig up the bird of paradise's roots with a shovel. Dig deep and wide to make sure you get all or most of the thick, ropy roots.

    • 4). Compost the dead plant if it died from natural causes. If disease was the culprit, throw the dead plant away, burn it or bury it 1 foot deep.
