Putting Debt On The Rack

Debt! It's an ugly word and, it's safe to say, most of us don't like being in debt. Every day we read articles and news snippets that give us, apparently, clever little ways to reduce our outgoings or at least make our money work harder for us.

You know the sort; use cash back credits cards to recoup some of your money, withdraw 10 grand from your cards and put them in a bank account and reap the higher interst rate. Forget that second option - interest rates are at an historic all time low so that idea won't work!

You might as well wear a big red hat with, "Fleece me" written across the front! Is there really any way to pay off your debt fast? Bar winning the lottery or building a successful business in a very short space of time; no! It's going to take some effort and you might have to skip the usual friday night out at the restaurant.

Here's a list of 10 money saving ideas that might just help to bust your debt:

1. Shop around for your medical prescriptions. If you do a little research you'll find that different areas of the country have different charges.

2. Cut your mobile phone bills. Haggle. Mobile phone companies don't want to lost you as a customer so, in most cases, they'll match the deals you can find elsewhere. You might need to go through the disconnections department and if you do make sure you quote the offer you've found with another supplier.

3. Smash the cost of broadband internet. Shop around, cheap out broadband price comparison prices. More importantly, use a broadband speed checker to see the maximum speed you're going to get. It's no good getting ADSL for pennies if it's only as fast as dial-up!

4. Make your money work for you. High interest savings accounts are a great way to help you chip away at your debt. There are still a number of banks paying over 5% interest so take your time and find the best deals.

5. Chip away at your mortgage. Instead of spending money on a huge new flat screen TV why not throw some of your spare cash at your mortgage?

6. Quit smoking. Not only will you be around 2 grand a year better off but you'll be on your way to being a lot healthier and less likely to die of one of the multitude of diseases caused by smoking.

7. Travel costs. Use public transport. The price of fuel is going through the roof and you'll end up paying for parking tickets on top of the travel costs.

8. Energy saving bulbs. Not only are they good for the environment but they'll also help to cut down on your home fuel bills. That leaves you more money to tackle your debts.

9. Go camping. Get back to nature and really save some cash. Hotels are generally pretty expensive when compared to heading into the wild with a tent. More exciting and definitely more fun than cocooning yourself inside 4 walls.

10. Hit the online coupon sites. Cut the price of just about everything you can find online; from groceries to car hire. Every type of coupon you could ever need is there and waiting to save you money.

That's all. Now take these tips and head and start saving some money and wiping out your debts.
