How to Patch a Hole in a Fiberglass Insert
- 1). Shake a can of expandable foam, and insert the tube into the hole in the fiberglass. Spray the foam under the surface of the fiberglass until you see it start to ooze out the hole. Remove the tube, and wipe away any excess foam at the top of the hole with a cloth. Leave the insert for 48 hours to allow the foam to cure before proceeding with the repair.
- 2). Sand the area around the hole with an electric sander and fine grit sandpaper until the area is smooth to the touch.
- 3). From the fiberglass repair kit, cut out a piece of fiberglass mesh that is 1/4 inch larger than the size of the hole. Use the first fiberglass mesh as a template to cut at least three additional patches of mesh.
- 4). Mix the adhesive solution contained in the repair kit, which is typically comprised of epoxy and resin.
- 5). Dip one piece of the fiberglass mesh into the adhesive, and wipe off most of it with your fingers. Press the mesh into place over the hole. Repeat the process to apply each additional mesh patch on top of the first piece.
- 6). Wait until the adhesive dries, which can take up to 24 hours. From the kit, apply a waterproof sealant to the entire patch using a small paintbrush. Allow the sealant to dry an additional 24 hours.
- 7). Sand the edges of the patch with the electric sander until the edges are indistinguishable from the surrounding insert.
- 8). Open a can of epoxy paint that matches the color of the insert. Paint the patched area until it blends in with the surrounding tub.
