How to Make an Address Plate Out of Wood
- 1). Place the 1-by-6-by-18-inch cedar board on a work surface. Look at both sides and choose one for the front face of the address plate. The front face should be facing upward on the work surface.
- 2). Route around the outside edge of the front face using a Roman ogee router bit. This will create a decorative edge for the face of the address plate.
- 3). Measure and mark the center of the 6-inch-wide ends approximately 1 inch in from the edges. Drill a 1/16-inch hole through each pencil mark. These are the pilot holes to fasten the plate to the exterior of your home.
- 4). Sand the entire address plate with fine-grit sandpaper. Always sand with the grain.
- 5). Apply a wood finish to the address plate. Allow the finish to dry completely prior to handling the plate.
- 6). Align the house numbers on the address plate so that they are evenly spaced. Screw the numbers in place.
- 7). Select a spot on the exterior of your house to position the address plate. A common location is near the front entrance. Hold the plate in place. Screw the 3-inch coated wood screws through the pilot holes into the exterior of the house to fasten the address plate into place.
