Preschool Art Projects on Wind
- Guessing the direction of the wind can be difficult without a guide like a windsock. Children can create very simple windsocks using simple materials. Give each child a foam cup, a sharpened pencil, paper streamers, glue and yarn. Use the pencil to poke several holes in the bottom of the cup. The streamers should be threaded through these holes and glued into place. Another hole is poked in the side where yarn is glued into place. Hang this yarn outside from your roof. When the wind blows, the streamers will blow in the direction of the wind.
- Help your child gather several different types of materials. Forks, spoons, shells, pieces of metal, plastic tubing, little clay pots, and similar materials are perfect for this project. Give the children all of these materials to pick from and help punch several holes through an aluminum pie pan using a knife. Cut away any sharp edges and sand the holes to make them save to touch. Children thread yarn through these holes, glue the yarn into place, and tie their wind chime materials to the bottom of the string. This wind chime can be hung outside near the child's bedroom so he can hear his own creation at night.
- A very simple kite can be made out of a paper bag. Give each child paper lunch bags, water color paints, stickers, streamers, tape and string. Children decorate the bag using their water color paints and stickers. They may also use markers or crayons. The streamers should be taped to the bottom of the bag while a handle can be created by taping string to the top of the bag. The kite is flown by throwing it in the air and catching the wind with the open end of the bag. Avoid highly windy days as the kite is meant for light kite flying.
- Wind is invisible to the naked eye but children can enjoy creating their own interpretation of the wind using water colors. Give them white construction paper and water colors. Tell them to paint what they think the wind looks like. Tell them to use their imagination and that it's okay if their painting looks different from the other children's paintings. These instructions should get the children to create wildly different paintings. Wait for the paint to dry and have everybody share their painting with the class.
