How to Patch a Bedroom Door

    • 1). Fill the hole with spray foam insulation. Attach the small tube onto the can's nozzle and insert it into the hole. Press the trigger to release the foam. Spray the foam until it extends out past the door's surface.

    • 2). Cut the excess foam off with a razor knife after it has completely dried and expanded. The drying process typically takes about 24 hours. Cut the foam so that it is slightly below the door's surface.

    • 3). Place vinyl spackling inside the hole with a 3-inch putty knife. Continue to apply the spackle until it is just past the surface. Use the putty to smooth it out and make it level with the door. Allow the spackle to completely dry overnight.

    • 4). Sand the spackle lightly with fine sandpaper until it is completely smooth. Apply primer to the entire door -- not just the patch. Doing so will prevent uneven paint areas on the door. Primer will help to cover the spackle and any existing color that is on the door, and will also help you to achieve a smooth finish. Apply the primer as you would paint -- dip a roller into a paint pan filled with paint and roll the roller back and forth on the door. Add more paint to your roll if needed. Use a paintbrush to paint hard-to-reach areas.

    • 5). Paint the door the new color with a roller and paintbrush once the primer is dry. Apply the paint in the same manner as you applied the primer.
