How to Poke Holes in Flowerpots
- 1). Empty the pot and turn it over so you can see the bottom.
- 2). Mark out five holes on the bottom of the pot with a marker. Place four holes evenly spaced around the perimeter of the pot and one in the center. If you have plans other than drilling for drainage holes, you can forgo the number of holes and the pattern and mark out the holes and pattern you need for your project.
- 3). Secure a ¼-inch drill bit to a hand drill. If you are poking holes into plastic, you can use a high-speed steel drill bit (silver in color) or a carbide drill bit (black in color), and if you are drilling terracotta, install a ¼-inch masonry drill bit. If you are drilling the hole for a specific reason and need a different size drill bit, you can install that drill bit instead of the ¼-inch drill bit.
- 4). Place the drill onto its slowest speed possible if the drill has variable speed control. If it does not, when you pull the trigger, pull lightly to avoid ramping the drill speed to full speed.
- 5). Place the tip of the drill bit onto the dot you marked on the pot. Hold the pot steady with one hand and hold the drill vertical with the other hand.
- 6). Turn the drill on by pulling the trigger and hold the drill in place. Allow the drill to cut; do not force it through the material.
- 7). Stop the drill by letting go of the trigger after the bit breaks through the material. Pull the bit out of the pot and repeat the process for each additional hole.
