How to Mount an External Hard Drive in Ubuntu

    • 1). Plug in your power cord to your external hard drive and make sure it is turned on. Then, plug the USB or firewire connection it uses into your computer running Ubuntu Linux.

    • 2). Click on the "Places" menu in the top left corner and find your external drive when it appears. When you find it, click on it once.

    • 3). Enter in your administrator's password when Ubuntu prompts you to do so, since you will accessing files on a new drive. After entering in your administrator's password, hit the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

    • 4). Wait for Ubuntu Linux to mount the drive. A new nautilus window will open (nautilius is the Ubuntu Linux equivalent of Microsoft's Windows Explorer) displaying the contents of your external hard drive after it has been mounted.
