    • 1). Nail a metal weep screed along the bottom of the wall, one inch above your patio pavement. Use a string level and chalk line to mark the bottom line for easy placement A weep screed is a vented metal starter strip that supports the tile and allows moisture to escape from behind the pavers.

    • 2). Staple a layer of metal latch screen to the entire wall surface. Mix enough mortar, according to the label instructions, to cover the lath. Apply the mortar over the lath with a wide trowel, smoothing it for a level surface. Scratch the surface of the wall with a rake to create a rough texture. Allow the mortar set overnight.

    • 3). Mix as much mortar as you will use in half an hour of paving. Butter each paver, applying a thin coat of mortar, using a notch edged trowel to remove the excess. Stick the paver tiles in place, starting with the bottom row on the weep screed. Use plastic tile spacers, pressed between tiles to evenly space them and lay the bottom row, buttering each paver and pressing it to the wall with a twisting motion to work the mortar into the grooves of the lath layer.

    • 4). Add upper rows, spacing with plastic spacers, in the same way, adding full tiles as far as possible. Score pavers with a tile cutter and use a brick set and mallet to split them along the scored lines where needed. Add pavers to the entire wall.

    • 5). Mix grout according to the label instructions, adding water and mixing thoroughly. Fill the gaps between each paver with grout mortar, using a rubber mortar float. Run a joint trowel gently over the grout to create a smooth, rounded grout line. Dip the trowel in water before each stroke for best results.

    • 6). Wipe the surface of the pavers with clear water and a coarse brick sponge to remove slurry from the face of the pavers.

    • 7). Install the patio pavers in the same way, starting the first row 1/4-inch from the wall under the weep screed. Do not install lath, butter the pavers and install them directly on the patio. Mix mortar and grout in the same proportions as for the wall and use a brisk sponge to clean slurry before it dries. To install patio pavers first, simply reverse the process and allow 24 hours before walking on the patio.
