How to Stake a Zucchini Plant in a Container
- 1). Select a container that will hold at least 5 gallons of soil. A container of this size will keep the Zucchini's roots from becoming confined. A large plastic bucket with a handle or a plastic storage tub will work well if you drill a hole for drainage in the bottom of the container.
- 2). Place a layer of heavy rocks in the bottom of the container. This will prevent the staked zucchini vine from tipping over due to strong winds and will help keep soil from leeching out of the container.
- 3). Insert a plant trellis such as a bamboo post into the center of the container. Hold the stake steady with one hand and fill the container with potting soil up to within 1 inch of the container's rim.
- 4). Plant the zucchini at the base of the stake.
- 5). Tie the zucchini vine to the stake as it grows by wrapping soft nylon plant ties around the stake and the plant vine in a figure-eight configuration. Tie the trailing ends of the plant ties behind the stake.
