Video: How to Round to the Nearest Inch
Video Transcript
Hi, I'm Drew Moyer and this is how to round to the nearest inch. Rounding to the nearest inch is the same as rounding to anything. You want to look at the fractional part. If the fractional part is less than 1/2, then the unit rounds down. If the fractional part is 1/2 or greater, then the unit rounds up. So let's take a look at some examples. We have 2 and 1/4 inch so again I want to look at the fractional part and I see that it's 1/4th. Is that more or less than 1/2? Well 2/4ths would be half so I know that 1/4 is less. So this would round down to 2 inches. The next example we have is 4 and 7/8ths of an inch. What does that round to? Again we want to look at the fractional part and we see that it's 7/8ths. Since I know that 4/8ths must be half, I know that 7/8ths is more than half. So this is going to round up. So 4 rounds up to 5. Next I have 7 and 8/16ths of an inch. Look at the fractional part, we see it's 8/16ths and what would half be? Well half of 16 is 8 so 8/16ths is exactly half. So this is going to round up to 8 inches and next I have 0 and 3/8ths of an inch. Again, we want to look at the fractional part and I see taht 3/8ths is less than half because 4/8ths would be half, so this rounds down. And since it's 0 it actually rounds down to 0. So, I'm Drew Moyer and that is how to round to the nearest inch.
