    • 1). Locate the side of your house that has the highest ground touching the foundation wall. Water runs downhill, so any water running down that hill will hit the wall with the highest land surrounding it first.

    • 2). Dig a 10-inch-wide by 24-inch-deep trench along that wall. When digging the trench, leave a 36-inch space between the wall and the trench. Follow the grade of the land where you dig the ditch. Wrap the trench around the 2 walls that connect to the first wall so you can wrap the perforated drainpipe around the house. Keep the same 36-inch distance from the wall and follow the grade of the land on the sides of the house where you wrap the ditch around the foundation. It is vital that you complete the drainage system around 3 sides so the system can drain the water around the home.

    • 3). Fill the bottom of the ditch with 2 inches of crushed gravel. Tamp the gravel with a metal tamper to compact the gravel.

    • 4). Slide the drainpipe sleeve onto the perforated drainpipe. The sleeve helps to keep small sediment from clogging the holes in the perforated drainpipe.

    • 5). Place the drainpipe into the ditch with the perforated side facing down towards the gravel.

    • 6). Fill the ditch with crushed gravel until the gravel rests level with the top of the drainpipe.

    • 7). Backfill the remainder of the ditch with topsoil until the soil rests level with the surface of the ground.

    • 8). Spread grass seed over the dirt to prevent the dirt from eroding and becoming a muddy mess when it rains.
