Types of Packaged Bread
- Sandwich breads are also called Pullman loaves. This kind of bread is baked in long, narrow pans with a lid that creates a flat-topped surface. It is sold pre-sliced. Generally sandwich bread is sold in whole wheat and white varieties. This simple, inexpensive bread is good for children's lunch sandwiches and toast.
- Packaged bagels make good breakfast and snack foods. These round breads are often topped with butter, cream cheese or lox. More exotic flavors can be eaten without any needed topping. There are many flavors available to suit the tastes of a wide range of people. Just a few of the available varieties are plain, egg, poppy seed, cinnamon raisin, onion and blueberry. Bagels are eaten raw or toasted and are sometimes used to create sandwiches.
- English muffins are small, round, fork-split yeast rolls. The most common use for English muffins are as a toasted breakfast bread. In the United Kingdom, these breads are also served at early-evening tea. English muffins can also be used as the base for creative mini pizzas. In this case they are smeared with tomato sauce and then topped with traditional pizza toppings before being baked in the oven.
- Buns for hot dogs and hamburgers are other types of breads which are sold in packaged forms. These buns come in white and wheat varieties. Hot dog buns are generally sold in packages of eight to compliment packages of hot dogs which are also usually sold in this quantity. It is also possible to purchase larger packages in multiples of 12 or more. These quantities are helpful for cookouts and other large scale preparations of burgers and hot dogs.
- Tortillas are thin flat breads made without leavening. Tortillas can be purchased in corn or flour varieties. Tortillas are used in several Mexican and Latin themed recipes like tacos and quesadillas or even in place of bread for creative sandwich making.
- Artisan bread is sold in smaller loaves than traditional sandwich bread because it is not mass produced the way other breads are. These breads come in special varieties like potato, honey oat and pumpernickel.
