Ideas for an Oktoberfest Birthday

    Invitations

    • Print a picture of a beer mug and a pretzel on card stock. Write or print the party details on the inside of the beer mug. For more decoration, attach a snack-size bag of pretzels to each party invitation and hand-deliver to your party guests. Another invitation idea is to find a German costume and take a picture of yourself in the costume. Print several pictures and write the party details on the back of each picture.

    Decorations

    • Decorate the party area in red, gold and black, which are the colors of the German flag. Use glass beer mugs as centerpieces and for balloon weights (for balloon bouquets). Hang pictures of beer, the German flag, pretzels and different types of sausage on the walls. Set up a beer-tasting table for guests to sample different types of beer. Get posters, pictures and postcards of Germany from local travel agents to place around the party area.

    Food

    • Serve a variety of sausage links, pretzels, bratwurst, roasted chicken and pork roast at the party. Other food ideas include cheese noodles, potato dumplings, potato salad, potato pancakes and apple butter. For dessert, serve apple strudel and German chocolate cake.

    Activities

    • Have bread dough ready for your guests to make their own pretzels. Place toppings, such as coarse salt, cinnamon, sugar and sprinkles, on a table for guests to use to add to their pretzels. Bake each guest's pretzel for her to eat. Make this into a contest by adding prizes to the player with the best, most malformed, smallest and biggest pretzel.

    Games

    • Have a "beer" race by marking a starting line and finish line 25 feet apart. Give each player a beer mug and fill it with water. When you say, "Go," players must race to the finish line trying to spill as little water as than can from their mug. The player with the most water in his beer mug after he crosses the finish line wins the race. For another game, try a yodeling contest. Award prizes to the players with the best, loudest, most authentic and longest yodels.
