How to Enjoy Cheboygan, Michigan
- 1). Rent a house or cottage on one of Cheboygan's many lakes and rivers. Hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts are also abundant in the area, but most people opt for camping during most of their visit. There are many resorts and campgrounds in Cheboygan, including Cheboygan State Park on the Straits of Mackinac. The state park has 78 sites with electric hookup, a picnic table, a fire ring and access to the centrally located bathhouse. There are also three rustic cabins for rent, a modern beach house with running water, playground equipment and grills. Facilities are open May1 through November 1.
- 2). Boat on the Inland Waterway, a 40 mile route that runs from the Cheboygan River through Mullet Lake, the Indian River, Burt Lake, the Crooked River, Crooked Lake and Pickerel Lake. You'll see cottages and mansions along the shoreline as well as wild areas. You can stop at one of the many marinas or restaurants along the way.
- 3). Fishing is popular in Cheboygan with so many inland lakes, rivers and Lake Huron right there. Many people visit Cheboygan in the spring for the walleye fishing and hunt up some morels while they are there. Rental rates are cheaper than in the summer. Ice fishing is popular on the smaller inland lakes in the winter.
- 4). Go to the Cheboygan Opera House, the Cheboygan County Historical Museum Museum Complex (both on Huron Street) and visit the famous lighthouses in the area.
- 5). Shop in the strip in the center of Cheboygan. It offers antique shops, sports shops and a movie plex. There's also an art gallery, handmade fudge, ice cream and hand-dipped caramel apples at Kilwin's Cheboygan and Nicholas Black River Winery with tours of the vineyard, winemaking room and winetasting table. You can't go to Cheboygan without visiting the famous gift shop Sea Shell City, featuring the "man-eating clam."
- 6). Consider visiting Cheboygan in the winter for skiing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Lake effect snow gives the Cheboygan area several inches of the white stuff to play in.
- 7). Experience the outdoors by relaxing on the sandy beaches, watching freighters and fishermen, hiking through the pine woods, locating rare wildflowers such as members of the orchid family and the pitcher plant, visiting a riding stable, biking and hunting.
- 8). Visit the Cheboygan County Fair if you're there at the beginning of August. The largest fair in the northern Lower Peninsula, it has such featured grandstand events as an open horse show, horse and tractor pulls, a Mud Run, Motocross, Tough Truck and 4-wheeler races. Fair events include carnival rides and games, craft displays and agricultural and animal exhibits. The fairgrounds are located on the east side of the Cheboygan River on 204 Lincoln Avenue.
