How to Make Cut Linoleum
- 1). Place the linoleum block on a work surface with the linoleum side facing up. Draw a design on the linoleum with a fine-tip permanent marker. Keep in mind that the drawing will appear as a mirror images when printed.
- 2). Carve away the areas of the design that are not to be printed using linoleum cutters. Use large-to-medium u-shaped gouges to clean away larger areas of the design and small u-shaped gouges to make shallow impressions or details in the design. Use medium-to-small v-shaped gouges to carve lines and other fine details into the design. Continue carving away areas of the design until you are satisfied with the end result.
- 3). Pour ink into a tray and roll the brayer in the tray to evenly coat it with ink. Roll the brayer across the carved surface of the linoleum to coat it with ink.
- 4). Inspect the coverage of the ink on the linoleum. Look for raised areas of the design that have ink on them where they shouldn't. Carve away the areas that have ink on them that shouldn't with the linoleum cutters. Wash off the linoleum block with water in an utility sink. Dry the block off with a paper towel.
- 5). Repeat Step 3. Lay a sheet of paper carefully over the linoleum block and rub over the surface with a barren to evenly transfer design to the paper. Lift the paper from the block and set it ink-side up and allow it to dry.
