Valentine's Day originated in times of the Roman Empire.
In ancient Rome the day of 14th February was a day to honor Juno, the Queen of the Roman Gods, Goddesses and also women and marriage.
If was a day before Feast of Lupercalia.
In Rome live of boys and girls were taking a separate tracks.
Their 'together' time was on the eve of festival of 15th February and the Roman's girls names were written on slips of papers and then placed in jars.
Then each young Roman would take note with name of the girl.
Couples joined in this way were spending together the time of festival.
In the same time pairs originated this were getting involved and pretty often that was effecting in a marriage.
In the times of Claudius II Rome was conquering and having a lot of unpopular campaigns.
Claudius the Cruel (as this was hick nickname) believed that young men did not wanted to join the army because they preferred to stay with women so at some point he canceled all the marriages and engagements in Rome.
In that moment Saint Valentine come on the scene.
He was a priest in a Rome and together with his friend Saint Marius helped the Christian martyrs and give marriages in a secret.
Because of that he was taken upon the Prefect who 'sentenced' him to be beaten to death with clubs.
Also his head had to be cut off.
Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns.
Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues.
He believed that the reason was that roman men did not want to leave their loves or families.
As a result, Claudius canceled all marriages and engagements in Rome.
This was executed on 14th of February in year 270.
You may want to know that there was also a pagan tradition in the month of February the Lupercalia to honor a god of heathen.
The ceremony looked in a same way as in the one of Romans.
A name of girl was placed in a box and man was taking them out.
To separate pagan tradition from christian one pastors of the Christian Church in Rome decided that saint's names will be used instead of girl's names and they have also chosen the Saint Valentine's day for a new celebration.
