Bachelor's Degree

• At least fifteen schools offer accredited programs for a bachelor's degree in biomedical informatics, according to Education Portal. During this degree program students train in advanced computer-use for medical and biological research. To obtain a bachelor's degree students must complete courses in science, computers, and statistics. Some of the science-related coursework includes biochemistry, molecular biology, and epidemiology. Students must also study computer-related topics such as health information systems architecture, information management, and medical data maintenance.
  
  

Master's Degree

• To qualify to enter a biomedical informatics master's program, you must have a bachelor's degree in biomedical informatics or another related area of study. Usually a bachelor's degree in computer science, biology, or medicine is preferred. Additionally, students must also complete several prerequisite classes or their equivalent before entry in the master's program in biomedical informatics. Some of these classes include calculus, computer programming, biology and physiology. Postdoctoral programs specializing in biomedical informatics generally offer either a master's degree or a doctorate.
  
  

Dual-Degree Programs

• Some universities offer a dual-degree program, which offers students the opportunity to earn two degrees simultaneously. Usually a computer-related degree is coupled with a biomedical informatics degree. For example, Portland State University has a dual-degree program offering a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science along with a Master of Biomedical Informatics. Much like the bachelor's degree or most other certificates in biomedical informatics, the dual-degree program uses classes in biology, computer science, informatics, and information engineering. Dual-degree programs usually take longer than a single bachelor's degree. Portland State University's program is designed to be finished in five years.
  
  

Nursing Informatics Programs

• Some schools offer a nursing informatics program, which is a subset of the biomedical informatics field. These programs train students how to prepare, collect, analyze, store, protect and maintain biomedical informatics systems in the field of nursing. Many of these biomedical informatics certificate programs, such as offered by DeVry, are accredited and recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, according to NursingDegree.net. To apply for the nursing informatics certification exam an applicant must have a bachelor's degree or higher in nursing or another related field. He or she must also have been a nurse for at least two years.
