How to Care for Saltillo Tile
- 1). Sweep or vacuum loose dirt from the tile. Clean unsealed Saltillo tile with a solution of ammonia and water. Use ½ cup ammonia to 1 gallon of warm water and scrub with a rag or soft bristle brush. If the tile is very dirty, you'll need to use a lot of elbow grease. Rinse thoroughly with clean warm water and allow to dry.
- 2). Seal Saltillo tile with a sealant made for this purpose. Apply the sealer evenly with a sponge mop and allow to dry.
- 3). Wipe up spills right away to protect the finish on your sealed tile. Clean with a mop dampened with water. Use a very mild cleaner if necessary. Harsh cleaners will strip away the sealant. Don't wax the tile, as this will make it slippery and lead to wax buildup.
- 4). Avoid dropping anything on the tile. Use rubber or felt caps on furniture that comes in contact with the tile. Don't set very hot or very cold objects on the tile. Be careful when vacuuming and avoid banging the vacuum on the tile, which can cause chipping.
