The history of RealChai has rather different origins. Anthea Cahill, the passionate chai girl behind RealChai, first discovered Chai tea on a trip to the Czech Republic of all places. The Czech republic has a strong tea culture and the country is dotted with various styles of tea houses. It was in one such house that Anthea had her first taste of Chai and became hooked! Before she returned to Australia she made sure to learn how to blend her own tea so that she could enjoy the drink in Australia and share it with others. It was from her passion for Chai and the belief that everyone should have the chance to taste REAL Chai that the brand RealChai began.

It is thought that Chai Masala was developed around 5000 years ago in India. It came about as a part of the native Indian Ayurvedic medicine system. To maintain the balance within the body, the Ayurvedic system prescribes the use of various spices. These spices are often steeped in hot water to create an easily ingestible herbal remedy.
So Chai Masala was developed to act as a herbal remedy to maintain a healthy, balanced body. Chai vendors, due to the high price of black tea, used milk, honey and sugar to provide more flavour at a lower cost. And thus Chai Masala was born.
