    Healthy Eating

    • While gym class focuses on exercise, a good diet is also a key component to a healthy lifestyle. A bulletin board that covers healthy eating habits reminds kids of the importance of diet without taking time away from PE activities. There are several ways to present the healthy eating theme. One idea is to incorporate the MyPyramid, which replaced the old food guide pyramid. It offers suggestions for items to include in a healthy diet. Other ideas include the importance of calcium, healthy snack options and healthy meal options.

    Exercise Options

    • Exercise often carries a negative stigma. Many adults and kids think of exercise as boring or hard work. This bulletin board option highlights exercise options that are also enjoyable. This might include skateboarding, playing kickball, building a snowman or rollerskating. For a more personal touch, take pictures of some of the students performing the different exercises for the bulletin board images. You can also have each child write her favorite way to get exercise on a small note card and hang all of the ideas on the board.

    Body Systems

    • This idea integrates science into the PE curriculum. Include a large diagram of a child's body with the major body systems. An image of the skeleton, muscles or the major organs all work well for the display. All three on one bulletin board is even better. Label the major parts of the body and include captions that explain how exercise and healthy eating benefit each of the body systems and specific organs.

    Gym Safety

    • Because of the physical nature of gym class, a gym safety bulletin board is a good idea. This might include safety rules for the students to remember, rules for using gym equipment or other ideas for keeping the class safe. Review the ideas on a regular basis, especially if the students seem to be ignoring some of the suggestions.

    Fitness Goals

    • This bulletin board idea lets the kids take an active role in creating the decorations. Each child sets a fitness goal for himself. It might be improving his diet, being able to run a mile without stopping or doing 20 push-ups in a row. Each child's goal will be different. Help the kids think of personalized goals if they have difficulty. The kids write the goals on a piece of paper shaped to fit the PE theme, like a sneaker or barbell. The shapes are then displayed on the bulletin board. This activity encourages kids to push themselves and set goals both for PE class and their health in general.
