Girvan- South Ayrshire is located on the southwestern tip of Scotland.
This small town was originally a fishing port, but in recent years has seen a rebirth as a seaside resort.
This seaside town is surrounded by majestic cliffs to the south and to the east and lovely rolling green hills to the north.
Girvan - South Ayrshire is approximately 20 miles south of Ayr and 30 miles north of Stranraer.
The close proximity to this ferry town gives tourist easy access to this beach town from other areas of Scotland and Ireland.
It is this ease of access that has helped this once small fishing village become increasingly popular in recent times.
The Glasgow South Western Railroad line serves the area and provides additional access to popular areas such as Glasgow.
This popular train line has a station downtown from which point you can visit many of the neighboring towns.
A trip just north of Girvan will provide you with some spectacular sites including numerous overlooks of Ailsa Craig.
Ailsa Craig is a small island that lies in the Firth of Clyde, off the shore of Girvan.
This large rock island is visible from any point along the coast of Girvan.
There is a lighthouse on the island that was completed in 1886, and provided fog signals until 1987.
Just slightly up the coast from Girvan is the Culzean Castle.
The castle was once the home of the Marquees of Ailsa, but is currently owned by the National Trust of Scotland and is a popular destination.
This cliff top castle was built in stages between 1777 and 1792.
Many of the main areas overlook the ocean and it was in this castle that President Eisenhower was gifted an apartment as a tribute to his role as supreme commander of the Allied Forces in World War II.
There is plenty for the traveler to enjoy in the area, with lovely beaches nestled along the foot of the cliffs.
There are also ferry rides in the summer to the Ailsa Craig which promises some beautiful sunsets.
