    • 1). Find and purchase a central processing unit that is faster than the Celeron 800 MHz processor that came with the Dell Dimension L700cxe desktop (see Resources below). Make sure that the new processor connects to a "Socket 370" connector or it will not fit on the computer's motherboard.

    • 2). Press the "Start" button on the computer's desktop and then click on "Shut Down." Wait for the computer to completely power off and then unplug the power cable from the back of the case. Remove all of the other cables and then lay the computer case on its side.

    • 3). Use a screwdriver to pull out all of the screws on the top and bottom side of the case's side panel. Slide the panel away from the computer and then set it aside.

    • 4). Find the square processor at the center of the motherboard. Push down on the small metal clamps located on both sides of the processor that are holding the processor fan into place. Lift up on the fan and pull it out of the case. Hold onto both sides of the processor underneath and carefully lift the unit straight up.

    • 5). Check the location of the pins on the socket and then compare them to the pins on the bottom side of the new processor. Set the processor into the socket and push slowly but firmly until it snaps into place. Put the new processor fan on top and snap its metal clamps down onto each side. Put the side panel back onto the case, place the case screws back in and plug in the power cable.
