How to Apply Plastic to Windows for the Winter

    • 1). Spray each of the windows in your home with window cleaner and wipe each window down with a rag. It is essential that that windows are clean before you apply the window film. Dirt and residue will prevent the plastic from sticking to the glass properly.

    • 2). Measure and cut two strips of double sided tape that are equal in length to the width of the window. Apply the tape along the edge of the top and bottom of the window. The tape will not stick to the glass if the surface is cold, so you may need to heat up the window using the hair dryer beforehand.

    • 3). Measure and cut two strips of double-sided tape that are equal in length to the height of the window. Apply the tape along the edge of the both sides of the window. The tape will not stick to the glass if the surface is cold, so you may need to heat the window up using the hairdryer beforehand.

    • 4). Repeat these steps for all of the windows in your home.

    • 5). Measure and cut a piece of plastic window film to cover the entire window. Line the window film up within the window frame and run your fingers along the edges so that the window film sticks to the double sided tape. Repeat this process with each window in your home.

    • 6). Use the hair dryer to heat up the plastic so that it is secured to the window. Begin at the top left corner and work your way down and across the window. The plastic will shrink when heated, resulting in a wrinkle-free appearance. Repeat this process until the plastic has been applied to all of the windows in your home.
