How to Buy Plastic Lumber
- 1). Look for plastic lumber products that are made with highly recyclable material. Most reusable plastics are made from a low- to high-density polyethylene (HDPE/LDPE) resins. This type of plastic is recommended since it is easily recycled and obtained. HDPE/LDPE resins are also commonly used for water and dairy product containers. Avoid PLs with PVC and polystyrene. These plastics are considered chemically hazardous to our health and the environment. They are not easily recyclable, do not decompose and are a big contributor to our landfills.
- 2). Limit the use of plastic lumber products that are strengthened with fiberglass, since it has been linked to pulmonary lung disease. Avoid using it for products that do not need a reinforced structure (like tables or benches).
- 3). Purchase plastic lumber from producers who get their plastic resins from local municipal recycling centers. The cost will be less, and you will support businesses in your community.
- 4). Use caution with plastic lumber that is composed with wood-plastic composites or a mix of different plastic resins. These types of materials are difficult to recycle and may contain highly toxic contaminants. Some brands of plastic lumber made with these materials are Veranda, ChoiceDek and Trex.
- 5). Avoid products that have mostly non-recycled plastics in its composition since recycled plastic materials are readily available. Plastic lumber with 50 percent or more of recycled plastic material is ideal.
