How to Lay a Kitchen Marble Countertop
- 1). Dull the surface of the countertop with a power hand sander, getting it flat and clean. Wipe off the dust.
- 2). Measure across the front edge of the countertop and mark the middle. Use a pencil and carpenter's square to make a line from the front to the back at the middle, so the counter is divided in two.
- 3). Spread thinset over the top of the counter using a notched adhesive trowel.
- 4). Press a course of beveled marble tiles onto the front edge of the countertop, starting at the middle and working to the sides. Position them so the beveled sides face out from the surface. Put spacers between them as you go. Cut the last tiles on both ends as needed to fit using a wet saw.
- 5). Set a row of standard marble tiles behind the front course of beveled tiles, again starting at the middle and working to the ends. Cut the last tiles on the wet saw as needed to fit.
- 6). Set additional courses of tiles into place, starting each row at the middle and working to the sides, cutting the end tiles as needed. Cover the entire countertop surface.
- 7). Let the thinset dry overnight. Remove the spacers.
- 8). Grout over the marble tiles with a grout float, dragging the unsanded grout over the surface and pressing it into the spaces between the tiles. Use a damp sponge to wipe up the residual grout.
