    • 1). Plan the project. Before digging up the yard, decide the look you desire for the yard. Working with limited space means giving each wanted item its own space. Measure and create a schematic as to where everything should go.

    • 2). Add window boxes. When working with limited ground area, create extra landscaping room by hanging window boxes or placing planters at the bottom of the windows. Blooming flowers or cascading ivy plants grown in these boxes will add depth and decoration.

    • 3). Install a trellis against open areas of the house to grown vines or climbing flowers such as roses. By going upward with the landscaping, you are saving lawn area.

    • 4). Plant medium or tall, but thin, shrubs. Certain trees and shrubs, including Green Tower boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) can replace small trees for decoration in a small space. The decorative shrub provides greenery and height to the yard without taking up a lot of lateral space.

    • 5). Place a bird bath in the yard. A decorative bird bath adds a water feature to the landscaping without using up the space of a pond.
