• When files are deleted, they do not actually leave the computer. The address of the file is erased, and the space the file takes up is then marked as available. The majority of the freeware recovery software seeks to address this problem by locating files and re-marking their address. Undelete freeware includes TOKIWA DataRecovery, Recuva, EASEUS Deleted File Recovery and PC Inspector File Recovery.

• Applications such as MjM Free Photo Recovery Software and Restoration are specifically for photo recovery. The software works with flash cards to recover photographs deleted with the camera and not the PC.

• Other free software is available to help with problems such as partition repair, RAID diagnostics and hard drive recovery. Looking for software based on a specific problem will usually lead to a variety of solutions and reviews of the various options.
