Care of Photinias
- 1). Plant photinia shrubs in a location that receives six hours or more of direct sunlight. Choose beds that drain well but provide enough organic matter so that the soil doesn't dry out completely.
- 2). Water the shrub sparingly in summer. Irrigate every 14 days when there is no natural rainfall. Apply about 1 to 2 inches of water during irrigation.
- 3). Prune photinia in early spring once the shrub finishes flowering. Remove the old flower heads and cut back overgrown branches to a leaf or bud. Prune out dead or damaged branches at any time.
- 4). Fertilize the shrub after pruning. Apply an acidic fertilizer formulated for evergreens at the label rate for your shrub's size.
- 5). Inspect the foliage year-round for fungal disease symptoms, including discolored leaves or fungus growth on the foliage. Treat diseases immediately with a fungicide formulated for the specific fungus type.
