Fun Autumn Art Projects
- Have students cut out leaf shapes from tissue paper in vibrant fall colors. Let them draw veins and stems using glitter glue. Give students laminator pockets and have them carefully arrange their leaves inside the pocket to create a fall collage. Run each student's packet through the laminator to create a somewhat transparent collage. Have students make a border for both sides of the picture out of colored paper and tape it on with double-sided tape. Hang the pictures on the classroom windows for a beautiful stained-glass effect.
- Ask your students to search at home or at recess for as many acorns as they can find on the ground. Collect all of the acorns and distribute them equally among your class. Provide the students with brown and orange acrylic paint and smocks. Let the students pop the caps off their acorns and then paint each one orange with a small brown dot on the pointed end of the acorn for a stem. Let the paints dry and then let the students draw silly faces and jack-o'-lanterns on the acorns with black permanent markers for a perfectly pocket-sized pumpkin patch.
- While many fall crafts are a little too complicated or messy for younger students, this one can be done with any students who can be trusted to use scissors safely. Randomly distribute different autumn-colored sheets of construction paper, one to each student. Show them pictures of different kinds of leaves that change colors in the fall, and then let each student cut out a leaf of her own. For a longer and slightly messier project, let the students decorate their leaves with red, gold and orange glitter before you string them all together and hang your classroom's new leaf garland in the room.
- Another project perfect for younger children, apple collages don't take very long to make and are easy to clean up. Tear or cut up red and green paper into small scraps. Re-use wrapping or tissue paper for this, or scraps of classroom construction paper from other projects. Paint one side of a paper plate with clear-drying craft glue and let each student stick as may pieces of red scrap paper as it takes to cover the plate. Glue down any loose edges by painting another layer of craft glue over the top. Have the students make a stem and one or two leaves out of the green scraps and glue them to the top of the plate to complete their apple.
