How to Make Custom Shoe Colors
- 1). Fill a stainless steel sink or an old bucket with three gallons of very hot water. Some fabric dyes will instruct you to add one cup of salt to the hot water, as the salt will help the dye to seep into the pores of the fabric. Check the instructions on your fabric dye package to see whether or not you need to add salt.
- 2). Put on a pair of latex or rubber gloves. Although the dye is not toxic if it comes into contact with skin, it will dye your skin.
- 3). Dissolve one package of powder fabric dye into a small-sized bowl with two cups of hot water.
- 4). Pour the dissolved dye mixture into the three gallons of hot water in your sink or bucket. Stir the water with a stainless steel spoon or an old spoon to make sure that the dye incorporates in the water before dyeing.
- 5). Soak your shoes under hot water before placing them into the dye bath. Wetting the shoes completely before dyeing will make sure that the shoes are dyed without splotches.
- 6). Place both shoes into the dye bath. Stir the shoes continuously for the first 15 minutes of dyeing. After the first 15 minutes, continue to stir the shoes occasionally for 45 minutes.
- 7). Pull the shoes out of the dye bath to check the color. If you'd like the color to be darker or deeper, return the shoes to the dye bath for an additional 20 minutes. If you're happy with the color, continue to Step 8.
- 8). Rinse the shoes under warm water. Once excess dye has been rinsed and the water runs clear, rinse the shoes in cold water. Dry the shoes in the dryer or allow them to air dry.
