How to Plant Bulbs Inside

    • 1). Pick out big, plump bulbs. When you are looking through the bulbs, do not take any bulbs that are shriveled. Feel them with your fingers to see if they have any soft or mushy spots. If they do, put them back as they will not grow.

    • 2). Choose a clay pot with drainage holes. Make sure you find one that is deep enough to plant your flower bulbs, plus an extra 2 to 3 inches. A 6-inch pot can usually hold three hyacinths, five tulip bulbs, or nine crocus bulbs.

    • 3). Place shard over the drainage holes. This will keep the soil from washing out.

    • 4). Add well-draining potting soil, stopping 1 1/2 inches before you reach the top of the pot. You can purchase potting soil or mix your own. Combine equal amounts of potting soil, peat moss and sand.

    • 5). Dig holes with your fingers. Leave about an inch of space between each flower bulb. Plant the bulbs into the holes, making sure to have the roots toward the bottom of the pot.

    • 6). Cover the bulbs with potting soil so they are about an inch deep. Leave at least 1/2 inch between the soil and the top of the pot.

    • 7). Water the flower bulbs thoroughly.

    • 8). Place the pots in a place that remains between 35 and 48 degrees F and remember to water once a week. An unheated garage or shed is a great place to keep your flower bulb pots. You can also sink the pots in the ground and cover with 3 to 4 inches of straw. This will help the bulbs to grow roots. If you live in a very cold region and you wish to bury your pots, you will need to cover the pots with 10 inches of soil and 10 inches of mulch. You must keep the bulbs from freezing.

    • 9). Wait eight to 14 weeks until the bulbs should have formed roots. Bring the pot indoors and place the pot in a cool room with a dim light. You do not want to shock the flower bulbs by taking them out of a cold environment and placing them in a heated, bright room. Leave here for one week, then you can bring them into the warmer, sunnier room of your house.

Water the potted bulbs lightly every 10 days to keep the soil moist.
