How Do I Build a Laminate Kitchen Peninsula?
- 1). Cut one section of laminate to 18 inches by 48 inches for the top of the counter. Cut one piece to 18 inches by 1 inch for the countertop side, and two additional pieces to 48 inches by 1 inch for the front and back. Cut one additional piece 42 inches tall by 48 inches wide for the back of the peninsula.
- 2). Establish the location on the floor where it will branch out from one wall. The peninsula needs to be a minimum of 36 inches from any standing base cabinet or appliance. This creates a clear passage around the island in the kitchen.
- 3). Place the two 24-inch by 30-inch wall cabinets on the floor side by side extending out from the wall, standing in an upright position, and apply a layer of caulking around the base of the cabinets. Apply a thin layer of wood glue along the top of the cabinets, and place the two 30-inch by 12-inch wall cabinets directly on top to span across the entire length.
- 4). Center the first sheet of particle board on the cabinets. Leave a 4-inch overhang on each side of the cabinets. Place a nail on each outer corner, and space nails every 8 inches along the outer edge of the cabinets to bind the counter top to the cabinets.
- 5). Glue the top sheet of particle board to the existing sheet. Apply a thick layer of wood glue to the top surface of the particle board that is nailed in place. Firmly press the top layer on to form a tight bond.
- 6). Add the laminate covering to the island by applying a thick layer of laminate glue to the top surface of the particle board and firmly pressing the laminate sheet into place. Glue all three side strips of laminate in the same manner.
- 7). Apply laminate glue around the back edges of the cabinets. Firmly press the 42-inch by 48-inch section to the back of the cabinet.
- 8). Finish the peninsula by applying a thin layer of caulking around each corner of the laminate. Use a glove to gently wipe away any excess to create a smooth, waterproof finish.
