The Secret - A Different Approach to Self-Development

"The Secret" is a perfect book for folks who are experiencing self development or inspirational type books for the first time.
The book moves fast and catches your attention right away.
You do not have to read or listen very long before "The Secret" reveals itself.
What is "the Secret?" The secret is that your thought process dictates your reality, at least that is my interpretation.
To many of us who read self development or inspirational books, "The Secret" is not a real secret.
This type of philosophy is written in one way or another in many books for hundreds if not thousands of years.
What makes this book so successful is the way it is written.
The author is kind of like a narrator or facilitator for several motivational or inspirational contributors.
These authors hit you with quick chunks of wisdom or examples about the power of thought manifestation.
I actually listened to the book on CD so there is the added benefit of hearing the different authors speak.
I particularly liked the link they drew between gratitude and prosperity.
The section on gratitude made me aware of how I and probably many other folks are constantly thinking about what we do not have or what is missing.
This kind of thinking, according to the book, invites more scarcity or pain.
The idea that your thoughts have an energy that can gain momentum rang true with me.
What I am used to hearing is be grateful for what you have because there are these other people who have a lot less then you.
This does not make me feel grateful it makes me feel guilty.
Or better yet, hearing the "inspirational" stories about people who were in life situations that were much worse than mine, yet they never complained and became much more productive than me.
Typical story would be like the homeless guy with an eighth grade education who gets burned on 90 percent of his body, hit by lightning, kidnapped by terrorists beaten and the left for dead in a dessert.
He re-emerges as a multi-millionaire CEO by inventing some breakthrough product all because he is grateful and never complained.
That kind of story does not motivate me, instead it makes me feel guilty and pathetic.
That's why I was pleased to hear another reason to be grateful.
Gratitude was not the only topic in this book Romance and money are subjects that are discussed at length.
One example they gave was of a women who was trying to attract the perfect mate.
So what she did was act as if her mate was already there.
She slept on one side of the bed so her mate would have room.
In addition she cleared out space in her closet, and parked her car to one side of the garage so her soul mate had space.
I thought this example and a couple of other examples were a little over the top.
But who am I to judge she landed her soul mate.
In addition there's a story about this guy who visualized a feather in great detail.
This feather had very distinctive markings.
Some time later that exact feather appeared to him looking exactly the way he visualized it.
I thought that story was pretty impressive.
For me, anyways, it's those kind of stories that make you think.
What I liked most about this book is that after finishing a chapter or a section there is a "secret summary" that recaps the main points.
.
I do not mean this in a negative way but the audio book had sort of an infomercial type feel to it.
This is probably because the book has many testimonials or stories tied to the points they are making.
I actually liked this format.
Overall this is a really good book that is an easy listen or read.
I did not feel the urge to fast forward through any parts of this audio book it kept my attention.
The book would be even more useful in my opinion if the spiritual element of attracting what you want was explained.
Putting your mind and thoughts on what you want is a crucial part of getting what you want.
But I believe there are more elements then thinking alone in getting what you want.
There are plenty of great book out there that compliment The Secret in giving you those other elements.
It seems like everyone has a copy of this very popular book already, but if you don't give it a try.
You won't be disappointed.
I would give this book 90 out of 100.
