Motorists should see signs of progress now that construction is underway on Phase 4 of the President George Bush Turnpike Western Extension (PGBT WE), also known as State Highway (SH) 161.

Initial construction for Phase 4 began on the PGBT WE in May 2010. Construction activities include installing erosion control devices and delivering equipment to the I-30 interchange area in anticipation of starting excavation activities.

PGBT WE is an 11.5-mile natural extension of the Bush Turnpike that extends from SH 183 in Irving to I-20 in Grand Prairie. Phase 4 of the project includes main lanes in each direction from North Carrier Parkway to I-20 and interchanges at I-30 and I-20.

In April 2010 the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) opened Phase 3 of the project eight months ahead of schedule. With this milestone, drivers can now enjoy three main lanes in each direction of the five-mile stretch, extending south from Conflans Road to North Carrier Parkway in Arlington.

On Feb. 26, 2010, the NTTA accepted the project but will not take ownership of the roadway until financing is complete, projected for later this summer.

Completion of this construction project should bring some much-needed relief to DFW’s growing congestion issues.
