How to Build a Small-Room Humidor
- 1). Remove any existing carpeting and wall trim from the room, as well as the underlayment down to the wooden or concrete floor. In addition, remove the textured plaster ceiling down to the drywall. It is easiest to use a putty knife for this purpose. Remove any light fixtures and the electrical covers from the room's light switch and electrical outlets.
- 2). Install the cedar flooring into the room according to the directions included with your specific style of flooring. Some floors require a sub floor to be installed, while other types of floor have the subfloor attached to the bottom of the cedar boards. It is best to use cedar as opposed to bamboo or oak because cedar is moisture-resistant, while other types of wood are not.
- 3). Apply construction adhesive to the walls of the room, then affix the cedar panels to the wall. The construction adhesive will hold as strong as nails would as long as it is used correctly and allowed to dry before the room is humidified. This process should not take more than a few days.
- 4). Install cedar paneling onto the ceiling, cutting an access hole where necessary to allow for the installation of light fixtures. To cut the paneling out for light fixtures, first locate where the hole will be positioned on the panel, then drill out a hole to allow for a jigsaw blade to enter. Once you have an access hole in place, use the jigsaw to cut out the access hole. The ceiling paneling can be installed with construction adhesive, just as the wall paneling was installed.
- 5). Install a glass door capable of sealing in the moisture created by the humidifier. This is a particularly important step, because a standard door will tend to let humidity exit the room not only through the crack at the bottom of the door, but also through the smaller cracks in the door frame. Installing these doors usually requires removing the entire frame of the door, but their installation is simple and straightforward. All you have to do is line up the new frame in the open doorway, level the door, then screw the door into the wall studs. Complete installation instructions are included with the purchase of these doors.
- 6). Replace the wall outlet and switch covers, and then install the light fixtures.
- 7). Install the humidifier into the room as well as a hygrometer so you can keep accurate tabs on the exact humidity in the room. This is the last step in turning a room in your home into a humidor. All that remains is to install the storage units, such as shelves or pegs, you need for the items that will be kept in the room.
