Animal Speeds

If you were asked whether an elephant can run faster than a human being, what would your answer be? An elephant may be an enormous animal but it can reach speeds of up to 25mph, faster than the vast majority of humans.
The exception being, top class sprinters such as Usain Bolt who for one has recorded a speed of 27mph albeit over a 10m segment of a race.
So the correct answer to this question is yes.
It's also true that elephants themselves rarely reach that top speed of 25mph unless they're angry.
Just remember, unless you're Usain Bolt, don't annoy one! The black mamba, a feared and dangerous snake from Africa has enough venom to kill 10-25 grown men in one single bite.
It is the fastest land snake on earth and has been known to touch 20mph, although this is more common when escaping from prey and not hunting it.
The peregrine falcon is easily the fastest creature over any land mammal, reaching speeds of over 200mph.
The fastest land mammal is the cheetah which can travel at 70mph but only in short bursts.
Unlike the cheetah, the pronghorn antelope from North America has excellent stamina but its maximum speed is around 61mph and is the second fastest over land.
The lion, the wilderbeest and the Thomson's gazelle can all reach 50mph and make up the top five quickest land creatures.
The slowest is of no surprise.
At 0.
03mph, the garden snail takes the wooden spoon.
The three-toed sloth and the giant tortoise are similar in speed reaching 0.
15 and 0.
17mph respectively.
The domestic cat can travel at 30mph which isn't much use if it's being chased by a 40mph greyhound in the open, and it's equally as fast as a kangaroo and a grizzly bear.
The hyena, ostrich and zebra reach speeds of around 40mph, the rabbit 35mph and the giraffe 32mph.
Much slower are the chicken (9mph), the pig (11mph), and the squirrel (12mph).
