How to Manage Pensacola Bahia Grass

    • 1). Plant or sod your lawn with Pensacola bahiagrass. Sodding is the best way to go because the grass becomes established much more quickly. This method prevents weeds and other problems from occurring.

    • 2). Apply fertilizer immediately after planting the grass, which will help the seed germinate as soon as possible if you are planting the grass. If you are sodding, the fertilizer will help the roots take to the soil much faster than without fertilizer. Use a 16-4-8 fertilizer ratio. The three numbers coincide with the amount of each nutrient in the fertilizer: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

    • 3). Water the grass once a week, so that it gets about 3/4 to 1 inch of water per week. This amount of water will penetrate the first 6-7 inches of topsoil, which is where most of the roots are.

    • 4). Mow the grass every 7 to 14 days. Adjust your mower to make sure it cuts the leaves to 3 inches in height. Cutting the grass regularly will help keep the lawn healthy and promote continuous growth.
