How to Tin the End of a Soldering Iron
- 1). Plug in your soldering iron or soldering gun and allow it to heat up to maximum temperature for about 10 minutes. If you are using a soldering gun, insert your preferred iron tip.
- 2). Place the soldering iron tip inside a can of commercial soldering tip cleaning paste while the iron is at maximum temperature. Pull the tip out of the paste and wipe it clean with a wet sponge. This removes any excess solder from the iron tip.
- 3). Purchase a roll of solder, which can be purchased at most hardware or electronics stores. Touch the tip of the solder roll with the heated tip of the soldering iron. Rub the solder on the heated tip until there is an even coat of fresh solder on the tip. The tip should have a metallic shine.
- 4). Use a wet sponge to wipe away any excess solder from the iron tip.
